PRESS RELEASE
Rapidform XOV Helps Samsung Electronics Improve Production Quality
Seoul, South Korea – Jan 9, 2007, INUS Technology Inc.(www.rapidform.com), a leading global provider of 3D scanning software, announces that the company helped Samsung achieve significant improvements in production quality through the use of automated 3D scan-based inspection. Samsung has deployed rapidformXO Verifier(XOV) software from INUS Technology at their LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) factories in China and South Korea for the inspection of flat screen LGPs(Light Guide Panels).
The LGP is an essential component in the production of high quality LCDs. The importance of the LGP is that it distributes light equally. The key attribute of an LGP is flatness. In older manufacturing and inspection processes, the LGP was manually inspected by eye or using a simple, one-dimensional height gauge on a limited number of manually selected points. As expected, inspection accuracy was low, the process was slow, and the number of inspection points was limited. However, the most critical issue in this older system was the bottleneck created by this manual inspection process which affected the entire manufacturing process.
The improvements: Rather than inspecting just a few points, millions of points are simultaneously examined. Replacing the older manual process, the scanner and software increase the accuracy from human interpretation to micrometers. And most importantly, the entire inspection process is sped up from tens-of-minutes per screen to less than one second per screen! In addition to the quality improvements gained by Samsung, the inspection process is no longer a bottleneck, but a high-performing component within their complete manufacturing process.
Samsung Electronics is a Korea-based company specialized in the provision of communication products. The Company operates its business through five business divisions: communication, semiconductor, digital media, liquid crystal display(LCD) and home appliances. Its communication division provides mobile phones, key phones and others. Its semiconductor division offers memory chips and others. Its digital media division provides TVs, videocassette recorders(VCRs), camcorders, digital versatile disc players, digital audio players, digital set top boxes(STBs), home theaters, audios and others. Its LCD division offers thin film transistor(TFT) LCD modules and others. Its home appliances division provides air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens and others.
Calvin Hur, Vice President of Marketing and Global Sales for INUS Technology, states, “The ‘Flatness Inspection System’ as designed by INUS Technology for Samsung is both easy-to-use and accurate. The process improvements in both speed and accuracy are significant. We are pleased to have assisted Samsung in the improvement of their production quality.”
The Rapidform solution is an “enterprise software” integrating data inputs, production planning, operations and process management on all levels of the enterprise from design to production to quality control. In LCD manufacturing at Samsung, the initial product manufacturing information(PMI), as defined by the LCD design team, is automatically extracted by rapidformXOV. In the shop floor production and inspection processes, XOV provides fully automatic real-time inspection and customized reporting that is optimized for speed. And when Samsung changes the inspection plan for LCD manufacturing, since XOV is parametric and fully associative, the modified inspection plan to new requirements is automatically adapted by XOV with 100% accuracy and repeatability. The Rapidform Geometry Calculation Engine has unmatched accuracy, is optimized for speed, and is PTB-certified, NIST-tested and NPL-tested. XOV utilizes an open architecture accessible thru a standardized and well-documented API(Application Programming Interface).
